Masaoka Shiki
A Japanese poet and literary critic, Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) is often regarded as a key figure in the modernization of haiku. He emphasized a shift from traditional themes to nature and personal experiences, coining the term 'shasei' or 'sketching from life,' which highlights the direct observation of nature.
